04.10.2018 / Salyan, Azerbaijan “Modern Information Society and Innovations” Public Union continues the implementation of the project “Support for the prevention of managed disinformation policy and protection of national interests in social networks” implemented by the State Support Agency for Non-Governmental Organizations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The next event within the project took place in Salyan. Representatives of local executive power, journalists, young people and bloggers participated in the event. Agshin Babayev, Deputy Director of the Social-Political and Humanitarian Affairs Department of Salyan District Executive Power, said that the institution he represents is interested in cooperation with civil society institutions. A. Babayev noted that protection of national interests in social networks is a general issue, so all layers of society should actively participate in this process. Seymur Verdizade, an expert of the project and a well-known journalist, noted that the goal is to ensure that young people protect national and moral values in information resources, especially on Internet information portals, and to prevent the spread of misinformation: “Currently, the use of the Internet by children is at a high level. But the issue of quality is unfortunately which is not at the level we want. The purpose of holding such events is to be sensitive to such problems. In general, all social platforms are called “virtual street”. But there is almost no control mechanism here. We must be able to control ourselves as individuals. We have to think about what idea we are writing. We must prevent such situations. Because in each of our homes, the next generation, the youth, is growing up.” Seymur Verdizade further said that social media, which is one of the modern contemporaries of the Internet age, is already surpassing traditional media: “In contrast to classical media, information exchange in social media takes place faster, shared information is read by a wider readership. Recent successes of Azerbaijan, global events held in our country, mega-projects that change the energy map of the region, transport infrastructure, the increase of our military power and other such positive situations irritate the Armenian diaspora, the institutions under their influence and a number of anti-Azerbaijani circles. Besides, in addition to freedom of speech and expression in our country, free internet environment and the lack of a unified control mechanism over social media allows a number of fanatical and radical religious groups to conduct propaganda and recruitment campaigns on this platform. The event was continued on the basis of discussions around the speeches of the participants.
